Energy Efficiency & Sustainability

Day 4 Topic

Improve network energy efficiency and overall sustainability

Hitting net zero

How is the mobile industry aiming to improve network energy efficiency and overall sustainability? For telcos, it’s targeting the network first and foremost given that it accounts for 90% of direct emissions. Better network planning, the use of AI, cloud workloads and batteries all help in this respect. The supply chain accounts for most of an operator’s emissions – but making changes is very challenging.

We will therefore examine the implications for the supply chain and how operators coordinate with their suppliers on joint reporting for things like transport emissions, materials used in manufacturing, and repurposing. As the industry embarks on a full scale shift towards ‘walking the walk’ of sustainable business practice, we will also review how the telecoms sector is helping other industries decarbonise.
